They overcame communication barriers through their actions, and helped Grandma Ng to improve her living conditions.

'Urban Slums in Hong Kong'

Habitat organised an Executive Briefing on World Habitat Day (3 October) focused on 'Urban Slums in Hong Kong'. We were honoured to have Mr. Vincent Ng, President of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Mr. Yip Ngai-ming, Professor of City University of Hong Kong and Mr. Tony Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Habitat Hong Kong as speakers. We urge all sectors of society to work together to eliminate urban slums in Hong Kong.

Hurricane Kills Over 1,000 In Haiti

More than 1,000 people in Haiti were killed by Hurricane Matthew in early October and millions of people displaced. Following the devastating earthquake in 2010, Haiti now faces yet another humanitarian crisis.
Habitat has been focusing on Haiti's housing need since the 2010 earthquake, and we are pleased to report that our current sites received minimal damage. Habitat is committed to supporting Haitians to live in decent homes, and will be working with families affected by this recent storm.

A Safe Place For Children

School should be a second home for children and Habitat China's Project School Works repairs non-state run kindergartens in Shanghai to provide better learning environments. Due to China's Household Registration policy, non-state run kindergartens are the only choice for migrant workers’ children. However, these kindergartens often do not have the resources to repair cracked walls and floors.

Habitat India has launched 'Sensitise to Sanitise', a campaign to provide 100,000 toilets in India. Access to secure sanitation improves lives dramatically, especially for women, as they no longer have to defecate in public areas, it reduces the risk of sexual assault and limits the spread of disease. Furthermore, teenage girls can happily attend school without worrying about where to find a toilet.

Helen Wong, Program Director of HKUST, is proud to have three roles connecting to Habitat. As well as being a volunteer, she also encouraged her daughter Charmaine (pictured) to participate in our building projects. "Instead of telling my daughter what to do, I show her the right things to do," said Helen with a smile on her face, while showing us Charmaine's photos from building trips in China and Thailand.

We are grateful to our active volunteers, for helping families secure a decent place to live.
